Trusty Soles: Making a Columbia Commerical / by Johnny Michael

Here is the final commercial cut:

[SPOT GOES HERE]

It all started when I met Dave at Jordan Brady’s Commercial Directing Retreat.

A year later, we were with a crew in Portland, Oregon in the trails of Mount Hood filming.

Trusty Souls is a story about the things that are with us, by our side and along our journeys. The things we love that last. That makes memories. Those define chapters of our lives and make life the wonderful thing that it is.

You think of those boots, that dog, and those good times together. Writing and working on this spot had been a pure joy. I was thankful to work alongside Dave with every step of the process, writing, storyboarding, and co-directing. I’m incredibly happy to see it come together and be part of my portfolio.

A dog that ages, along with boots that stand the test of time.

Dave did an incredible job coordinating the production and scouting the locations. Gathering the right crew made the whole day go smoothly on set. We had three and eventually four dogs to prove the concept. Three pairs off boots, from new to gently weathered. and a wardrobe that progressed to show the hiker’s technical skills and investment. From novice to pro, from puppy to good ol’ dog — it represents an arc of life and the things that are with us for the journey.

Here’s a fun video to get a glimpse at our wardrobe shopping spree pre-shoot

Now I ain’t saying I’m a pro storyboard artist, but here are just a few of the boards and thumbnails I sketched up to help support the pre-viz:

I want to share the behind the scenes:
